Creating a retail environment, I want the space to reflect the company’s culture. It can create a sense of pride for employees and an attractive selling point for customers. Depending on how you design a retail space, it can offer a host of benefits. Pearl Bridal Boutique is a great example because it was a low-budget project and when the owner first came to me, she came to us because she wanted a different look than what she saw in the area.
The custom designed and locally fabricated steel windows were a simple and direct way of creating a retail feature but it also set the tone for the rest of the retail spaces to come. They also helped create flow and a common hallway around the store.
The bend in the wall by the last window is a corner and bay window that integrates with the display wall around the corner and the courtyard in front of the cafe which has become a beautiful space for extending events.
The interior space is mostly carved out with sheet rock.
Designing and building Pearl reinforced for me the fact that good design in a retail environment ensures that the client has their own imprint. Architects can take it to a certain point, but when the retail space is about decorative items, the space must allow the client to put her own stamp on it.
