On our recent visit to Barcelona, we happened upon a few works by Antonio Gaudi . . . ok seeing his work was one reason to go to Spain . . . ok a big reason . . . yes, yes he is one of my FAVORITE ARCHITECTS. Hopefully these pictures will give you an idea why. Another reason? He designed his buildings upside down by hanging weights on strings, took a picture and then figured out how to build it by flipping the picture up side down. The catenary arches/forms created are in perfect tension and when flipped are then in perfect compression, just what you want for masonry construction.

I was in Barcelona in ’95 and went to La Sagradia Familia, it opened my eyes to the world of architecture. I love his work! He remains my favorite, no one else even comes close. Looks like it’s a lot closer to completion then when I was there. Hmm…wIsh I was there now…:)
